Stuttgart’s transition back into the German top flight was always going to be tough, so 13 points from their opening eleven fixtures (W4 D1 L6) is something the Swabians should be reasonably content with – this amount gives them a 5 point cushion above the relegation zone. Stuttgart are also the only team in the Bundesliga to earn 100% of their points on their home soil, so coach Hannes Wolf will no doubt be looking to take advantage of the guests shaky form.

Borussia Dortmund may have begun the season in commanding fashion, but the string of matches before the international break were much less kind to them. Defeats in thrilling but hot-tempered matches against RB Leipzig (a 3-2 defeat), Hannover 96 (a 4-2 defeat) and Bayern Munich (a 3-1 defeat) sandwich a disappointing 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the league. While in Europe, the BVB have failed to get the job done in both of their outings against APOEL (two 1-1 draws).

From a betting perspective, backing over 2.5 goals and both teams to score looks to be the way to go here. Borussia Dortmund’s offensive frontline is a force to be reckoned with – the trio of Pulisic, Kagawa, and Yarmolenko are expected to provide support for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who’s 10 goals in 11 appearances in the league this season make him the Bundesliga’s 2nd top scorer and worthy of backing to score anytime. On Stuttgart’s part, forward Daniel Ginczek is expected to continue up front, and he’s found the back of the net in each of his last three outings across all competitions (2 Bundesliga and 1 DFB Pokal) – also worth consideration.

Dortmund’s defensive form has taken a huge tumble since the season openers – in part due to the number of injuries and suspensions along the way (see team news) – so Stuttgart look set to get on the score sheet too on Friday, particularly given their home form (see statistics). Despite the Dortmund’s recent inconsistencies, it’s hard to look past them as the favourites though. Stuttgart lost to struggling Hamburger SV last time out, while the visitors’ recent attacking performances have been statistically impressive – the BVB just need to finish their chances! Our prediction: a 3-1 Borussia Dortmund win.
